The Thorpedo won a total of five Olympic Gold medals in his career. Notably, he earned three golds at the 2000 Sydney Olympics and added two more at the 2004 Athens Olympics.
His remarkable achievements in the pool, combined with his youthful charisma and determination and made him an iconic figure and a source of national pride.
